The longest yard (sale)

Monday | January 28, 2019
All News

Organizers hope to bring visitors to Johnsonville, Lake City, Kingstree and Hemingway

Between now and October 7th and 8th, there is plenty of time to polish up your antiques, hang up your old clothes, finish up your crafts, wipe off your toys and get ready for the largest yard sale this area has ever seen!

Ask a friend to use their yard or a business to use their parking lot along the route of the 65-mile Three Rivers Yard Sale. It will run along Hwy. 41/51 between Johnsonville and Hemingway, Hwy. 261 between Hemingway and Kingstree, Hwy. 52 between Kingstree and Lake City and Hwy 341 between Lake City and Johnsonville.

The yard sale was the brainchild of Johnsonville businesswoman Shannon Tippett. In an effort to get area communities involved with each other and bring people to the area, she and members of the newly formed Johnsonville Area Chamber of Commerce decided a yard sale would be great.

'Not only is participation free, it's a great way to make a little extra cash,' Johnsonville Councilwoman Mona Dukes said, 'but it's a way to bring more visitors to our cities' merchants and restaurants to find the jewels that exist there.'

Many groups in small municipalities around the nation try various ways to promote and improve themselves. This type of event is the perfect example of collaboration without compromising any one's individuality. The yard sale is named for the rivers that surround the areas; Lynches River, Pee Dee River and Black River.

'Our brand new Chamber committee thought this idea up and we contacted our neighboring cities and moved forward,' Dukes said. The Johnsonville Area Chamber of Commerce began meeting last fall and recently became incorporated. In addition to the yard sale, they are planning an autumn decorating contest for area businesses and school children with a theme of literary characters. They are also getting ready for their second annual Trunk or Treat October 31 on the front campus of Johnsonville High School.

Maps of the yard sale route will be promoted on the Johnsonville Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page and will be placed in businesses and restaurants in the four municipalities closer to the sale dates of October 7 and 8.

Unless fees apply to locations where sales are held, there is no charge and cities are asked to waive any permit or licensing fees.

This is a joint effort initiated by the Johnsonville Area Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber, the Town of Hemingway and the Lake City Chamber of Commerce.
